Full House is an American Sit-Com which was huge in the 80s and it uses a very specific set-up in each episode which kept people hooked but most importantly keep them feeling and changed them. It’s a simple set-up that kept the showing running for years. It used a 3 act story set-up
Act 1 – The Set-Up
Setting up the scene
Introducing you to characters
Introducing you to who you are going to be watching
Keep it short, you don’t need a 10 minute set-up because people will get the point and get bored. Make it short, sweet and simple but also easy to understand. Use simple language.
Act 2 – The Confrontation
Shows us the struggle, the problem that needs to be solved. Usually it ends up in more problems or more plot points that you have to overcome.
Example: Think about every Mr Beast video. There isn’t just one plot point there are multiple plot points that are set up because they get themselves into more situations which also need resolving. Typical Mr Beast videos follow this format. There is a BIG picture idea he then takes his crew on a journey where they have to survive/give away. Then introduces multiple sub plots to his videos so there are always things going on.
Act 3 – The Resolution
Wraps everything up in a bow. So that way things get back to normal but in Full House it did one key thing. It left us the viewers changed, with a new outlook or new moral compass in life.
How do you use this setup in your content?
Storytelling is your secret power it gets people to connect. Get out of the how-to game and into the storytelling game.
How to do this:
- Share personal experiences and vulnerabilities
- Establish an over arching goal that viewers can participate in
- Use production elements to evoke emotion
Get Personal
If you can turn yourself into a hero and not just a checklist then people will connect, love you forever and want to subscribe.
Make it personal tell the audience little things about yourself in the videos so you’re not just a random person on the internet you appear as someone who they could be friends just a regular normal person.
All the mistakes, no one is perfect so why do you come across like that in videos. It builds a bridge between you and the audience.
Over Arching Goal
Adding an over arching theme is a great way to keep people connected with you. The problem you proposed at the start of your video, keep going back to it. Check in on it. Update it and show how that original problem is now getting solved
Production
“Music, at it essence, is what gives us memories.” – Stevie Wonder.
Music and tone is a key element of everything, look at films and change the song. Think of a famous death scene in a blockbuster movie not put some happy ukulele music behind it. All of a sudden it’s lost it meaning and effect. It doesn’t feel sad even though what you’re watching is, but it feels more like a comedy than a death scene.
Music makes us think about things in our past but also gives us hope to what we could achieve in the future but your tone has to be good as well.
So, embrace the Full House Effect and create transformative content that resonates, changes perspectives, and engages audiences on a deeper level. The goal is to inspire creators to keep pursuing their content creation journey with storytelling as a powerful tool.
